When is Enough, Enough?

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
—-Bob Dylan, Blowin’ in the Wind

At what point is enough, enough?

There is no rational person in the world who can justify what Hamas did on October 7, 2023.

There is no rational person in the world who can justify the level of killing of innocent civilians by Israel in response to Hamas.

So, when is enough, enough?

Instead of focusing our considerable influence over Israel to limit their military action, we continue to supply them with weapons and ammunition.

Instead of bringing the world together to fight against terror groups like Hamas and the Houthi, we demonstrate our duplicity by continuing a policy that ignores actions by Israel fueling the hatred in Gaza toward the Jews.

We ignore the images of children shaking in fear after enduring the incessant bombing of cities by Israel with American weapons.

Make no mistake about it: 30,000 Gazans have died in this war, killed by American technology.

We stand silently by while the greatest tragedy since World War II unfolds before our eyes.

All because we are afraid to ask the question why.

Why do groups like Hamas exist?

Why do the Jews and Palestinians hate each other?

Why do we continue to arm countries who engage in actions counterintuitive to a permanent solution?

Why hasn’t Congress and the President said enough is enough?

Instead of a unified Congress focusing on the crisis in the Middle East, we have factions focusing on suppressing free speech in our schools and campuses because students and student organizations have rightfully pointed out the contradictions in our Israeli policy.

We condemn the actions of Hamas and other groups yet withhold any criticism of Israel out of political cowardice in the face of a vocal Israeli lobbying machine that would have us ignore the atrocities inflicted by Israel against Gaza and Palestine.

Congress’s intransigence hamstrings the President, effectively neutering foreign policy.

But then again, expecting intelligent action from Congress is dreaming. While there are plenty of examples, here is the latest.

Coach (Senator)Tommy Tuberville, a man whose picture will never appear next to the word “Statesman” in a dictionary or anywhere else for that matter, has it figured out. He said we are a Judo-Christian nation and those from outside the US do not know God.

I’m not sure what a Judo-Christian nation is—perhaps some new martial arts level combining Jesus and combat. I’m also certain Tuberville—if he ever finds out the difference between Judo and Judeo—will assume Judo was invented here sometime shortly after Jesus arrived on the Mayflower and converted the heathen natives.

That’s who we send to Congress. Under these circumstances, putting our hope on Congress is a bit naïve.

Since the onset of the war in Gaza, the US has sent more than 21000 precision-guided munitions to Israel. This is over and above the $6 billion ($6,000,000,000) we already send annually. Yet Hamas thought it prudent to attack them and got the response they expected.

Why? And, more to the point, what can drive such insanity?

As I prefaced this piece,

There is no rational person in the world who can justify what Hamas did on October 7, 2023.
There is no rational person in the world who can justify the level of killing of innocent civilians by Israel in response to Hamas.

Joe Broadmeadow

The only solution in the Middle East is a two-state compromise. A Palestinian State and a State of Israel.

That is the only solution.

Since 1948 and the formation of the State of Israel, we are witnesses to history being repeated over and over and active participants in its continuity.

We are not helping Israel or Palestine formulate a lasting solution. We are facilitating an Israeli version of the final solution, the wholesale destruction of a people because of cultural, ethnic, and religious differences and an unwillingness to compromise.

There is no other way to judge this.

In 1930s when Hitler rose to power and the Nazis began their campaign against the Jews we stood idly by. We turned away shiploads of Jewish refugees at our borders (sound familiar), sending them back to face extermination.

We have an opportunity to apply enough pressure on Israel to reign in the wholesale slaughter of innocent civilians. It is time we acted like the nation we claim to be and tell Israel and terror groups like Hamas, NEVER AGAIN.
