Reflections

Throughout my life, there have been moments when I experienced profound satisfaction. Growing up, I remember the thrill of throwing a baseball from shortstop to first base without bouncing it three times, driving alone in a car, or speaking to people who took an interest in what I said.

As time marched on, more professional accomplishments took over. Finishing basic training in the Air Force and having a beer with a Tech Sgt. whom I thought hated me.

Joining the East Providence PD and catching bad guys.

Imagination!

Getting promoted into positions once held by cops I had learned to respect.

Writing something that touches someone’s heart.

But the other day, as I was sweeping up sand from the sandbox in our backyard that my grandson takes great pleasure in tossing around the yard—something I repeat at least four times a week— it occurred to me that might be the epitome of success.

Giving a small boy the freedom to enjoy the moment, to throw sand wherever his heart desires, without anyone telling him not to, to imagine he is warding off dragons with magic dust or disguising himself with invisibility spells, might be the greatest accomplishment of all.

That, my friends, is a life well lived.
