All Things Must Pass…

Dear Mr. President,

I realize you are busy running the country, but I wanted to follow up on a couple of letters I sent to you in the past.

The first one, https://joebroadmeadowblog.com/2020/11/17/an-open-letter-to-presidential-candidate-joe-biden/, I sent after you were elected President. In it, I asked you to promise me a few things. Among them, that you would restore America’s reputation and the American people’s faith in democracy.

In this, I believe you have mostly succeeded.

I sent the second one, https://joebroadmeadowblog.com/2023/09/08/another-open-letter-to-joe-biden/, back in September of last year. You might have missed it with your busy schedule, so I wanted to restate my concerns.

Here’s a quote from that letter.

“I heard you speak once after the release of your book, Promise Me, Dad. One thing you said, that brought to mind the Camelot of the Kennedy years, was it is time for a new generation to assume the mantle.”

Joe Broadmeadow

What’s changed? I could sense your sincerity that night. You meant it was time for the next generation. So why are you running again? I know you rose to the occasion as history demanded to defeat Mr. Trump, but that task is done.

It’s not that I think you’ve done a bad job as President. History will show you were precisely the person to right the ship after the disaster of the Trump Administration. Now we need a new captain to navigate the complexities of the coming decades.

If you believe the threat of Mr. Trump’s inexplicable popularity demands you stand against him as the only one who can defeat him, the very closeness of the polls would say otherwise.

If the election is a repeat of 2020, I believe most Americans will choose country over chaos. But what if they don’t? What if the willful ignorance and continuity of lies by Mr. Trump and his cohorts prevail? What if the quirks and complexities of the Electoral College were to put the man back in office?

Let’s face reality, Mr. President. You are on the final leg of the journey. While I hope you enjoy many more years on this earth, the inevitability of mortality grows closer with each moment.

You are in a unique position to set us on a new course. While you have a great wealth of support, you also must face a certain reluctance by many to put someone of your age back into the demands of the Presidency.

The signs of the demands and burdens on a President are always evident when one looks at their inauguration images and how they look just four short years later. You’ve borne the burden well, but is it something we should impose on you for four more years?

It is time to be the person who turned this nation of pessimists and naysayers around and paved the way for the return of the vitality and optimism that made this country thrive.

Take the great leap of faith in America. Let our political system’s rough and tumble world, with your support and encouragement, find us a new leader with the youth and enthusiasm to continue what you started.

It is time, Mr. President, it is time.

Sincerely,

Joe Broadmeadow

  1. Sorry Joe, I usually agree with you, can’t do it on age being a reason to step back this year. We need a continueing presence in the White House, stability is key to regaining the sanity of the country. President Biden has surrounded himself with good advisors, people who are alert and watchful. In todays internet world, any slight slip or trip would instantly be thrown out to the masses. I stand behind Joe Biden, at my own age, 80 I do have to take a quick nap some days but I consider myself to be as my Dad would say, “on the ball”. I see no difference in my behavior now and when I was 77, the ago of the other guy, who does not know his a$$ from his elbow, another of my Dad’s gems.
I don’t see anyone else in the Democratic party that could step up and win this year as soundly as President Joe Biden will.
